Overview
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is a book-style foldable phone that combines a narrow outer display with a larger, tablet-like inner screen. Launched in 2023, it uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy processor and has 12GB of RAM. Its main appeal is not simply having a bigger phone: it is being able to read documents, view maps, or run compatible apps side by side without carrying a separate tablet. The 7.6-inch inner display and 6.2-inch cover display both support refresh rates up to 120Hz.
Compared with the Fold4, the Fold5 introduced a hinge that lets the two halves close without the previous wedge-shaped gap. Reviewers generally considered it a refinement rather than a major redesign. Samsung's multitasking tools, including split-screen layouts and a taskbar, are among its strongest features. The rear camera system provides useful wide, ultrawide, and telephoto options, but photography is not the main reason to choose this model over a conventional flagship phone.
Who it's for
The Fold5 suits buyers who regularly switch between messages, a browser, calendars, and work documents. Its inner display also helps with ebooks, comics, and games that adapt well to the larger format. Supported S Pen models can be useful for handwritten notes or annotations, although the pen is sold separately and there is no built-in storage slot. If you mostly use one app at a time, the extra size and cost may deliver less practical benefit.
It is also worth considering for shoppers who want Samsung's foldable software at a substantial discount from newer models. That calculation depends on the actual offer: a discounted new US unit with a valid warranty is different from a refurbished phone or an imported version. Buyers who prioritize a lightweight handset, effortless one-handed typing, or the best camera performance for their money will probably find a conventional premium phone easier to recommend.
Things to know before buying
The Fold5 has an IPX8 water-resistance rating, but it does not have a rated level of dust protection. Its flexible inner screen needs more careful treatment than ordinary cover glass, and the crease remains visible in some lighting. The narrow cover screen can feel cramped for typing. Widescreen video also leaves substantial unused space on the inner display, so its diagonal measurement does not translate directly into a proportionately larger movie image.
For US purchases, check carrier compatibility, unlocked status, storage capacity, and warranty eligibility. Compare the full checkout price rather than a headline offer tied to trade-ins or a service plan. Charging tops out at 25W wired, and a wall charger is not included. Samsung promised four Android generation upgrades and five years of security updates from launch, so remaining support is shorter than on newer foldables. Repair coverage and the seller's return policy deserve particular attention.
